Prolotherapy

What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy, short for “proliferative therapy,” is a non-surgical treatment aimed at stimulating the body’s natural healing processes to repair injured tissues and relieve chronic pain. This therapy involves injecting a solution, typically containing a natural irritant substance such as dextrose (sugar water) or other agents, into damaged ligaments, tendons, or joints. The goal is to induce a mild inflammatory response, triggering the body’s healing mechanisms and promoting tissue repair.

How Prolotherapy Works:

  1. Stimulation of Healing Response:
    • The injected solution irritates the injured tissue, prompting the body to initiate a healing response.
    • This leads to increased blood flow, growth factor release, and deposition of new collagen fibers, which strengthen and stabilize weakened or damaged ligaments and tendons.
  2. Reduction of Chronic Pain:
    • By strengthening the affected structures, Prolotherapy helps stabilize joints and reduce excessive movement that contributes to pain.
    • It can alleviate chronic pain caused by ligament laxity, joint instability, or repetitive strain injuries.
  3. Conditions Treated:
    • Chronic Low Back Pain: Prolotherapy is effective for treating chronic low back pain, especially when caused by ligament and tendon laxity.
    • Joint Instability: It can improve joint stability in conditions like knee instability or shoulder dislocations.
    • Tendonitis and Tendon Injuries: Prolotherapy promotes healing in tendon injuries such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) or Achilles tendonitis.
    • Osteoarthritis: It may provide pain relief and improve joint function by stabilizing arthritic joints.
    • Sports Injuries: Prolotherapy accelerates recovery from sports injuries by enhancing tissue repair and reducing pain.
  4. Minimal Downtime and Side Effects:
    • Prolotherapy is performed as an outpatient procedure, typically requiring a series of injections over several sessions.
    • Patients may experience mild soreness or swelling at the injection site, which usually resolves quickly
